VENTILATION SYSTEMS IN MINES AND UNDERGROUND MINE GALLERIES

Mines and underground mine galleries are among the working areas where ventilation systems are most critical. During underground mining operations, advanced mine ventilation systems are used to ensure worker safety, remove harmful gases from the environment, maintain sufficient oxygen levels, and prevent the accumulation of explosive gases.

Mine ventilation systems are designed not only for worker comfort but also directly for life safety. Methane gas (CH₄), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), nitrogen oxides (NOx), diesel equipment emissions, and dust particles generated in underground galleries create serious risks. Especially in coal mines, ventilation systems are an integral part of mining operations due to the risk of firedamp gas formation.

Modern mine ventilation systems are designed together with main ventilation fans, auxiliary fans, fresh air systems, exhaust systems, gas detection systems, ex-proof equipment, automation systems, and emergency scenarios. These systems are engineered in accordance with international mining standards, ATEX directives, IECEx standards, and occupational safety regulations.

FRESH AIR SUPPLY SYSTEMS IN MINES

In underground mines, a continuous supply of clean air is required to allow personnel to work safely. The main purpose of fresh air systems is to deliver clean air taken from the surface to underground galleries in a controlled manner.

High-capacity main ventilation fans are used in these systems. The airflow generated by the fans moves through main galleries and secondary galleries, delivering clean air to working areas. When designing fresh air systems, the number of workers, equipment loads, gallery lengths, blasting activities, and gas generation rates are taken into consideration.

Especially in deep mines, air temperature and humidity levels can reach critical values. Therefore, in some projects, air cooling systems are also used together with fresh air systems. Providing sufficient fresh air is critically important for maintaining oxygen levels and diluting harmful gases.

MINE EXHAUST AND CONTAMINATED AIR DISCHARGE SYSTEMS

Mine exhaust systems are mechanical ventilation systems that safely discharge contaminated air generated underground to the outdoor environment. Diesel engine emissions, blasting gases, dust particles, and various harmful gases produced during mining operations must be continuously removed from the environment.

High-capacity axial fans and radial fans used in exhaust systems extract contaminated air from the galleries and convey it to the surface. Especially in coal mines, exhaust systems are operated continuously to prevent methane gas accumulation.

In modern systems, exhaust performance is continuously monitored using airflow measurements, gas sensors, and automation systems. In this way, safe air quality is maintained in working areas and occupational safety standards are ensured.

EX-PROOF VENTILATION SYSTEMS AND EXPLOSION PROTECTION

The risk of explosion is extremely high in coal mines, galleries containing natural gas, and underground mines where methane formation occurs. For this reason, a significant portion of the equipment used in ventilation systems is selected as Ex-Proof, meaning explosion-protected.

Equipment used in ex-proof ventilation systems includes;

• Fan motors • Electrical panels • Sensors • Automation equipment • Lighting systems • Cable glands

and consists of equipment certified according to ATEX and IECEx standards.

Especially in coal mines where firedamp explosions may occur, methane gas is prevented from reaching its lower explosive limit (LEL). Thanks to ventilation systems, methane gas is continuously diluted and kept at safe levels.

In mines with explosive atmospheres, ex-proof ventilation systems are not only a preference but also a mandatory occupational safety application.

MINE VENTILATION FANS

Main fans and auxiliary fans constitute the basic equipment of mine ventilation systems. Main fans are generally positioned on the surface and provide ventilation for the entire mine site.

Auxiliary fans are used in production areas, newly opened galleries, and blind spots. These fans deliver clean air to working areas through flexible air ducts or steel air ducts.

Modern mine fans are controlled with frequency inverters to improve energy efficiency.

GAS DETECTION AND MONITORING SYSTEMS

Continuous gas monitoring is required for mine ventilation systems to operate effectively. For this purpose, gas sensors are installed at different points throughout the galleries.

The main gases measured are:

• Methane (CH₄) • Carbon Monoxide (CO) • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) • Oxygen (O₂) • Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

Gas detection systems operate in integration with ventilation automation and generate alarms at critical levels. When necessary, fan capacities are automatically increased or emergency evacuation scenarios are activated.

MINE VENTILATION AUTOMATION AND SMART CONTROL SYSTEMS

In modern mines, ventilation systems are managed through SCADA and central automation systems. Airflow rates, gas levels, fan performance, temperature, and humidity values are continuously monitored.

Thanks to smart ventilation systems, high-capacity ventilation is provided only in the areas where it is required, thereby reducing energy consumption. These systems also enable emergency scenarios to be activated automatically.

Today, mine ventilation automation systems are among the indispensable technologies of modern mining in terms of both occupational safety and energy management.

Since mine ventilation systems operate continuously, regular maintenance is of great importance. Main fans, auxiliary fans, air ducts, sensors, and automation systems are inspected at specific intervals.
