WHAT IS AN EXPROOF VENTILATION SYSTEM?

Exproof (Explosion Proof) ventilation systems are specially designed mechanical ventilation systems intended to eliminate explosion risks that may arise from sparks, arcs, or excessive heating in environments containing explosive gases, vapors, or dust. Unlike standard ventilation solutions, these systems are manufactured in compliance with ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) and IECEx standards to ensure safe operation in explosive atmospheres. All equipment used in Exproof systems is designed to be sealed against explosion risk, non-sparking, and controlled in terms of surface temperature.

The primary purpose of these systems is to keep the concentration of flammable gases accumulated in the environment below the lower explosive limit (LEL – Lower Explosive Limit) and to prevent the formation of an explosive atmosphere. At the same time, they continuously dilute possible gas accumulations in the environment, thereby creating safe working conditions. Exproof ventilation systems are mandatorily used in high-risk areas such as the chemical industry, petrochemical plants, paint production areas, fuel storage facilities, LPG/LNG filling stations, and pharmaceutical production facilities.

In system design, zone classification (Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2) is taken into consideration, and equipment selection is carried out accordingly. In addition, the EN 60079 series standards define the design and equipment selection criteria for these systems. In this respect, Exproof ventilation systems are not merely an air circulation solution, but also a critical occupational safety and process safety system.

FOR WHAT PURPOSE ARE EXPROOF VENTILATION SYSTEMS USED?

Exproof ventilation systems are used to provide safe working conditions in environments where there is a risk of explosive atmosphere formation. The primary purpose of these systems is to minimize the risk of explosion by controlling the concentration of flammable gases, vapors, or dust. Especially in environments containing hydrocarbon-based gases, it is known that these gases become explosive within certain concentration ranges. Therefore, the ventilation system is designed to keep these gases below the lower explosive limit (LEL).

The second important purpose is to prevent electrostatic charge accumulation and spark formation in the environment. All equipment used in Exproof systems has antistatic properties and is manufactured from non-sparking materials. In addition, the electric motors and fans used within the system are selected in accordance with specific temperature classes (T1–T6) in terms of surface temperature.

These systems are also of great importance in terms of process safety. Especially in chemical production facilities, controlling solvent vapors is a critical requirement for both production quality and occupational safety. Exproof ventilation systems designed in accordance with ATEX and IECEx standards have become mandatory for compliance with international occupational safety regulations.

WHERE ARE EXPROOF VENTILATION SYSTEMS USED?

Exproof ventilation systems are used in all industrial areas where explosive gases, vapors, or combustible dust are present. The application areas of these systems are quite extensive, and they have become mandatory particularly in facilities involving high-risk processes. Petrochemical plants, refineries, LPG and LNG filling stations, paint and solvent production facilities, pharmaceutical factories, dusty process areas used in food production such as flour and sugar processing, and mines are among the most common areas where these systems are used.

In these areas, the environment is divided into zones according to the ATEX Directive. Zone 0 refers to areas where an explosive atmosphere is continuously present, Zone 1 refers to areas where an explosive atmosphere may occur during normal operation, and Zone 2 refers to areas with short-term risk. Exproof equipment is selected and installed according to this zone classification.

Furthermore, these systems are used not only in production areas, but also in storage tanks, pump rooms, boiler rooms, and enclosed process volumes. Especially in areas containing volatile chemicals, the ventilation system must operate continuously. In this way, gas accumulation is prevented and the risk of explosion is minimized. Exproof ventilation systems play a critical role in ensuring compliance with occupational safety regulations in industrial facilities.

EXPROOF FANS

Exproof fans are special fan systems designed to operate safely in explosive atmospheres. These fans are manufactured using special materials and design criteria so that they do not generate sparks or overheat during operation. The fan casing, impeller structure, and connection components are generally selected from antistatic and non-sparking materials. In addition, special tolerances are applied between the fan blades and the casing to prevent spark formation caused by friction.

Exproof fans are generally ATEX-certified and suitable for Zone 1 or Zone 2 environments. The EN 14986 standard defines the design criteria for fans used in explosive atmospheres. In fan selection, airflow rate, pressure, ambient gas type, and temperature class are taken into consideration. In addition, the surface temperature of the fan must be below the ignition temperature of the gas present in the environment.

These fans may generally be axial or radial type and are protected with coatings that have high chemical resistance. Exproof fans are one of the most critical components of the ventilation system, and incorrect selection may create serious safety risks. Therefore, engineering calculations and compliance with standards are of great importance.

EXPROOF ELECTRIC MOTORS

Exproof electric motors are specially designed motors that ensure safe operation in explosive environments. These motors have sealed enclosures designed to prevent sparks or arcs that may occur inside the motor from reaching the external environment. At the same time, the motor surface temperature is kept below specified limits, thereby preventing ignition of gases in the environment.

These motors are manufactured in accordance with ATEX and IECEx standards and have different types of protection, such as Ex d, Ex e, and Ex n. For example, Ex d (Flameproof) motors are designed to contain an internal explosion without transmitting it to the external environment. The EN 60079 series standards define the design and testing criteria for these motors.

In motor selection, power (kW), efficiency class (IE3, IE4), temperature class (T1–T6), and protection class (IP55, IP66, etc.) are taken into consideration. In addition, these motors are generally used together with frequency inverters to provide process control.

Exproof motors form the basis of safe operation in ventilation systems. Since incorrect motor selection may increase the risk of explosion, the selection of this equipment must necessarily be carried out by qualified engineers.
